President Donald Trump is once again teasing the idea of giving money back to Americans this time in the form of tariff rebate checks.

Speaking to reporters outside the White House on Friday morning before heading to Scotland, President Trump responded to questions about the August 1 deadline for new tariffs on dozens of countries. If no trade deals are reached by that date, a fresh wave of tariffs could hit potentially bringing in billions more in revenue.
When asked whether that incoming tariff revenue could be returned to the American people, Trump gave a surprising answer.
We're thinking about that actually, Trump said. We have so much money coming in, we're re thinking about a little rebate a rebate for people of a certain income level might be very nice.
He added:
That's a very good idea. You just made a lot of news.
What Could a Tariff Rebate Look Like?
This marks the first time Trump has floated the idea of tariff rebate checks, and no formal plan has been announced by the White House.

How much revenue has actually been collected from tariffs?
Who would qualify for a rebate check?

This isnt the first time Trump has publicly supported the idea of returning savings to taxpayers. Back in February, he floated the idea of giving Americans a DOGE check referring to potential savings from Elon Musk's scontroversial DOGE supply cuts.

Although that idea didn't materialize, it showcased Trump's interest in creative stimulus-style payouts linked to economic shifts and major policy changes.
Context: Are More Stimulus Checks Coming?
Outside of this tariff rebate tease, there are no official plans for new stimulus checks in 2025. The last significant payments most Americans received were during the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, a small number of Americans did qualify for a $1,400 unclaimed rebate during this years tax season a part of a backlog from pandemic-era stimulus programs.
