Amazon is taking one of its biggest steps yet in the grocery space, rolling out thousands of perishable grocery items to its Same-Day Delivery service. Customers in more than 1,000 cities and towns across the U.S. can now order fresh produce, dairy, meat, seafood, baked goods, and frozen foods delivered alongside millions of other items within hours. The company plans to expand this capability to over 2,300 cities by the end of 2025.
From Bananas to Bread Why Groceries Are a Big Deal for Amazon
With over $100 billion in gross grocery and household essentials sales in 2024, Amazon has become a go-to shopping destination for more than 150 million Americans. Popular Same-Day grocery orders often include bananas, avocados, strawberries, and Honeycrisp apples items that now rank among the top 10 products purchased through the service.
The new offering means customers can now buy milk alongside electronics, oranges and apples with a mystery novel, or frozen pizza along with tools for a home project all checked out in a single cart and delivered in hours.
How Fresh Grocery Same-Day Delivery Works
To ensure freshness, Amazon uses a specialized temperature-controlled fulfillment network. Every perishable item goes through a six-point quality check upon arrival and before leaving for delivery. Temperature-sensitive groceries are packed in recyclable insulated bags the same used for Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods Market to maintain quality until they reach customers doors.
This grocery expansion complements Amazons existing delivery options from Amazon Fresh, Whole Foods Market, and local specialty retailers.
Cost of Same-Day Grocery Delivery
Prime members: Free on orders over $25 in most cities; $2.99 fee for smaller orders.
Non-Prime customers: $12.99 per order, no minimum purchase required.
When Amazon first added fresh groceries like bananas, milk, eggs, and bread to its Same-Day lineup in cities like Phoenix, Orlando, and Kansas City, customers quickly embraced the convenience.
Expanding Across America
Currently, more than 1,000 U.S. cities and towns have access to fresh grocery Same-Day Delivery. By the end of 2025, Amazon aims to reach over 2,300 cities, with additional communities expected in 2026.
